Photography Education

October 20, 2021

As a mom, I know how important it is to take photos of children. While cell phones do a great job, nothing can compare to the results you get from using a DSLR camera. More specifically, your iPhone can’t hold up to the photos you get when you shoot in manual mode.

I know what you’re thinking. That sounds intimidating. Believe me, I’ve been there. Auto mode is so much easier, but it doesn’t give you the freedom to be creative with your photography. If you’re ready to dust off the DSLR camera your husband bought you last Christmas, then keep reading to learn how you can kick off the auto-mode training wheels.

My Journey to Learning to Shoot in Manual Mode

The first time I picked up a DSLR camera was about eight years ago. My husband had purchased one for his upholstery business, and I started researching how to use it. I quickly realized that there was a lot you could do, and the idea for my photography business was born.

At the time, I was in between jobs and trying to figure out what I wanted to do in life. When I discussed my photography idea with my husband, we made a list of pros and cons, and the pros obviously won! Even though I had no idea what I was doing, I was determined to learn how to shoot in manual mode.

I remember feeling frustrated and wished that I had someone to teach me. I often found myself retreating to the simplicity of auto mode, but every time, I the results disappointed me. Since then, I’ve had years of trial and error, and I feel like I’m finally in a place where I can pass my knowledge on to other moms who are feeling overwhelmed by manual mode.

5 Reasons to Shoot in Manual Instead of Auto

You’re probably still trying to figure out if shooting in manual is worth all the hassle, but I promise you it is. It’s the only way to get the most out of your camera. In fact, here are five of the top reasons that you need to ditch auto mode and start utilizing manual mode:

  1. You have complete creative control to shoot images in your own unique style.
  2. You can create a beautiful Bokeh effect in your portraits.
  3. The depth of field and focal length become easier to control.
  4. The shutter speed lets you control light that you don’t rely on a flash.
  5. You don’t need the fanciest gear as long as you know how to use manual.
